Complete tutorial: Fact vs Opinion, Inference, Assumption, identification techniques, common errors, practice questions & exam strategy for UGC NET Paper-1.

1

Meaning of Fact —

Fact = Verifiable + Objective + True/False

✅ Verifiable
✅ Verifiable
✅ Verifiable
  • "Water boils at 100°C at sea level." ✅ Verifiable

Key Characteristics:

  • Can be proven true or false
  • Based on evidence/observation
  • Objective (independent of personal feelings)
  • Measurable/observable
  • Same for everyone
2

Meaning of Opinion —

Opinion = Subjective + Personal Belief + Cannot Be Verified

  • "Online education is better than traditional education." ❌ Subjective
  • "Summer is the most pleasant season." ❌ Subjective
  • "This movie is boring." ❌ Subjective

Key Characteristics:

  • Cannot be proven true or false
  • Based on personal feelings/beliefs
  • Subjective (depends on the person)
  • Contains value judgements (good/bad, right/wrong, beautiful/ugly)
  • Often uses words like: should, must, best, worst, better, beautiful, ugly, believe, think, feel
3

Fact vs Opinion — तथ्य vs राय

BasisFactOpinion
VerifiabilityCan be verified (true/false)Cannot be verified
NatureObjectiveSubjective
BasisEvidence, data, observationBeliefs, feelings, values
UniversalitySame for everyoneCan vary from person to person
Key WordsIs, was, are, according to, research showsShould, must, best, worst, believe, think, feel
Example"The Earth revolves around the Sun.""The Earth is the most beautiful planet."

Exam Point: UGC NET में अक्सर यह पूछा जाता है कि "Which of the following is a fact?" या "Which of the following is an opinion?"

4

Meaning of Inference —

Inference = Reading Between the Lines = Logical Conclusion from Evidence

Key Points:

  • Inference text
  • Inference must be supported by text evidence
  • Different readers may make different inferences (but should be logical)

5

Types of Inference —

  • Cause-Effect Inference —
  • Author's Purpose Inference: Author

Example:

Text: "She checked her watch repeatedly, tapped her foot, and looked at the door."

  • Inference: She is waiting for someone and is impatient.
  • Type: Character inference (personality/feeling)
6

Meaning of Assumption —

Assumption = Unstated Belief + Taken for Granted + No Direct Evidence

Key Points:

  • Assumption implicit

Statement: "Since she is a doctor, she must be rich."

Assumption: All doctors are rich. (अप्रमाणित belief)

7

Inference vs Assumption — अनुमान vs धारणा

BasisInferenceAssumption
DefinitionLogical conclusion from evidenceUnstated belief taken for granted
BasisText evidence/cluesNo direct evidence (unstated)
NatureLogical reasoningBelief/Supposition
SupportMust be supported by textOften unsupported
QuestionWhat can we conclude? What is taken for granted?
ExampleShe packed bags → She is travelingShe packed bags → She has money to travel

8

Comparison Table —

ConceptDefinitionKey QuestionExample
FactVerifiable statementIs it true/false?"Delhi is the capital of India."
OpinionPersonal belief/feelingDoes someone believe this?"Delhi is the best city."
InferenceLogical conclusion from evidenceWhat can we conclude?"She packed bags → She is traveling."
AssumptionUnstated belief taken for grantedWhat is taken for granted?"She packed bags → She has money to travel."
9

Identification Techniques —

Fact vs Opinion:

  • Fact: Can be checked/verified. Look for numbers, dates, statistics, research findings.
  • Opinion: Personal. Look for value words (best, worst, beautiful, should, must, believe, think, feel).

Inference vs Assumption:

  • Inference: Based on text evidence + logical reasoning. Ask "What can I logically conclude from this?"
  • Assumption: Unstated. Ask "What is the author taking for granted here?"
10

Common Errors —

  • Error 1: Opinion को Fact समझ लेना — "The movie was boring" को fact मानना (यह opinion है)
  • Error 2: Fact को Opinion समझ लेना — "Water boils at 100°C" को opinion मानना (यह fact है)
  • Error 4: Inference को Assumption समझ लेना — evidence-based conclusion को unsupported मानना
  • Error 6: Under-inference — obvious conclusions
  • Error 7: Making assumptions without evidence
  • Error 8: Confusing author's opinion with fact
11

Common Exam Traps —

  • Trap 1: Opinion statements that look like facts — "Research shows that..." (if citation is given, may be fact; if not, may be opinion)
  • Trap 2: Facts that sound like opinions — "Most students prefer..." (if survey/data supports, it's fact; if not, opinion)
  • Trap 3: Inference options that are too broad or too narrow
  • Trap 4: Assumption options that are actually inferences
  • Trap 5: Options that mix fact and opinion
  • Trap 6: Extreme inference (not supported by enough evidence)
  • Trap 7: Assuming something without textual support
12

  • Inference: "Reading between the lines" — logical conclusion from clues
  • Assumption: What is taken for granted — unstated belief

Key Questions:

  • Fact: Is it true/false? Can we check it?
  • Opinion: Does someone believe this? Is it subjective?
  • Inference: What can we logically conclude from the text?
  • Assumption: What is the author taking for granted?

Exam Formula:
