Vocabulary in Context — संदर्भ में शब्दावली

Vocabulary in Context का अर्थ है किसी unfamiliar word का अर्थ surrounding words, sentences और passage के context से समझना।

Vocabulary in Context = Understanding Word Meaning from Surrounding Text

Key Point: किसी शब्द का सामान्य अर्थ passage में उसके context से अलग हो सकता है। आपको word का dictionary meaning नहीं, बल्कि passage में उसका अर्थ पहचानना होता है।

सरल उदाहरण:

  • Sentence: "The teacher's acerbic remarks made the students uncomfortable."
  • Context: Remarks made students uncomfortable → Acerbic = sharp/harsh
  • Sentence: "She was elated when she received the scholarship."
  • Context: Received scholarship (positive event) → Elated = extremely happy
2

Types of Context Clues — संदर्भ सुराग के प्रकार

  • Definition/Explanation — परिभाषा/व्याख्या: Word को directly define या explain किया जाता है। Example: "The altruistic act — helping others without expecting anything in return — was appreciated by all."
  • Synonym — पर्यायवाची: Similar word का उपयोग। Example: "The arduous journey was difficult and exhausting."
  • Antonym — विलोम: Opposite word का उपयोग। Example: "Unlike her gregarious sister, she was shy and reserved."
  • Example — उदाहरण: Examples word के meaning को समझाते हैं। Example: "She had many culinary skills, such as baking, grilling, and sautéing."
  • Inference — अनुमान: पूरे sentence/passage से meaning infer करना। Example: "The mellifluous voice of the singer captivated everyone in the hall."
  • Contrast — विरोधाभास: Opposite idea से meaning समझना। Example: "The politician was loquacious, but his opponent was silent and reserved."
  • Cause-Effect — कारण-प्रभाव: कारण/प्रभाव से meaning समझना। Example: "The exigent situation required immediate action."
3

Pronoun Reference — सर्वनाम संदर्भ

Pronoun Reference यह identify करना है कि एक pronoun (he, she, it, they, them, this, that, etc.) किस noun (antecedent) को refer कर रहा है।

Pronoun → Refers to → Antecedent (the noun it replaces)

Key Point: UGC NET में pronoun reference questions passage की coherence और clarity को test करते हैं।

सरल उदाहरण:

  • Sentence: "Shyam lost his book. He was very upset."
  • Pronoun: He → Refers to: Shyam
  • Sentence: "The students submitted their assignments. They were well-prepared."
  • Pronoun: They → Refers to: The students
4

Pronoun-Antecedent Agreement — सर्वनाम-पूर्वपद संगति

  • Number Agreement: Singular pronoun → singular antecedent; Plural pronoun → plural antecedent
  • Gender Agreement: He/him/his → masculine; She/her/hers → feminine; They/them/theirs → gender-neutral/plural
  • Person Agreement: I/we (first person), You (second person), He/she/they (third person)

Example:

  • Correct: "Every student must submit his/her assignment."
  • Correct (Gender-neutral): "Every student must submit their assignment." (accepted in modern usage)
  • Incorrect: "Every student must submit their assignment." (traditionally considered incorrect; now widely accepted)
  • Correct: "The team celebrated its victory." (collective noun → singular)

Ambiguous Reference:

  • Ambiguous: "Ravi told Shyam that he was selected." → कौन selected हुआ — Ravi या Shyam? (Unclear)
  • Clear: "Ravi told Shyam, 'I was selected.'" (Clear)
5
