Mapping & Data Visualization — मानचित्रण एवं आँकड़ा दृश्यीकरण

Data Visualization data को visual/graphical form में present करना है ताकि patterns, trends और relationships आसानी से समझे जा सकें।

Data Visualization = Visual Representation + Easy Understanding + Pattern Recognition

Mapping data को geographic/spatial context में present करना है — maps के माध्यम से spatial patterns दिखाना।

Types of Maps in DI:

  • Choropleth Map — क्षेत्र-रंग मानचित्र: Regions shaded according to data value
  • Dot Map — बिंदु मानचित्र: Dots represent occurrences or density
  • Proportional Symbol Map — आनुपातिक प्रतीक मानचित्र: Symbol size represents value
  • Flow Map — प्रवाह मानचित्र: Movement of people, goods, or information

Choropleth Map — क्षेत्र-रंग मानचित्र

Choropleth Map geographic regions (states, districts, countries) को different shades/colours से colour करता है — shade/data value के अनुसार intensity बदलती है।

Choropleth = Regions + Colour Intensity = Data Value

Key Characteristics:

  • Darker shade = higher value, lighter shade = lower value
  • Used for rates, ratios, percentages (not raw totals)
  • Best for normalised data (per capita, per area)
  • Colour scheme is important for interpretation

Examples:

  • State-wise literacy rate
  • District-wise population density
  • Country-wise GDP per capita
  • Regional unemployment rate

Exam Trap: Choropleth maps work best with rates/percentages, not raw population totals. Raw totals can be misleading because large areas may have high totals simply due to size.

Dot Map — बिंदु मानचित्र

Dot Map dots का उपयोग करता है — each dot represents a fixed number of occurrences or a single occurrence.

Dot Map = Dots + Each Dot = Fixed Value

Key Characteristics:

  • Each dot = specific quantity (e.g., 1 dot = 1000 people)
  • Shows distribution and density
  • Clustering of dots shows high concentration
  • Used for raw counts (population, cases, events)

Examples:

  • Population distribution map
  • Disease outbreak mapping
  • Crop distribution
  • School/health facility locations

Advantages: Shows spatial distribution clearly; good for visualising density.

Limitations: Can be cluttered with too many dots; dot placement can affect interpretation.

Proportional Symbol Map — आनुपातिक प्रतीक मानचित्र

Proportional Symbol Map symbols (circles, squares, etc.) का उपयोग करता है — symbol का size data value के proportional होता है।

Proportional Symbol = Symbol Size ∝ Data Value

Key Characteristics:

  • Larger symbol = larger value
  • Symbols placed at specific locations (cities, centres)
  • Used for absolute values (totals, counts)
  • Good for comparing magnitudes across locations

Examples:

  • City-wise population
  • State-wise GDP
  • University-wise enrolment
  • Country-wise exports

Advantages: Easy to compare magnitudes; visually striking.

Limitations: Overlapping symbols can obscure data; perception of area vs radius.

Flow Map — प्रवाह मानचित्र

Flow Map movement (people, goods, information, etc.) को दिखाता है — lines/arrows direction और magnitude (thickness) दिखाते हैं।

Flow Map = Movement + Direction + Line Thickness = Magnitude

Key Characteristics:

  • Arrows/lines show direction of flow
  • Thickness of line shows volume of flow
  • Used for movement data
  • Shows origins and destinations

Examples:

  • Migration patterns
  • Trade routes
  • Transportation networks
  • Information flow
  • Commodity flow between regions

Advantages: Shows movement and direction; good for understanding flows.

Limitations: Can become cluttered with many flows; complex to interpret.

Misleading Graphs — भ्रामक आरेख

Misleading Graphs वे graphs/charts हैं जो intentionally or unintentionally data को गलत तरीके से प्रस्तुत करते हैं — viewer को wrong conclusion पर पहुँचाते हैं।

  • Truncated Y-Axis: Y-axis starts at a value > 0 → exaggerates differences. Example: Y-axis starts at 98 instead of 0 → small difference looks huge.
  • Inconsistent Scale: Unequal intervals or non-uniform scaling → distorts perception.
  • 3D Effects: Adds unnecessary depth → distorts proportions and comparisons.
  • Cherry-Picking Data: Showing only selective data that supports a particular view.
  • Different Bar Widths: Varying bar widths despite same category — area perception is misleading.
