Environmental Pollution environment में harmful substances (pollutants) का introduction है जो living organisms और natural systems को negatively impact करता है।

Pollution = Contaminant + Environment + Adverse Effect

Types of Pollution:

Air Pollution — वायु प्रदूषण

Air Pollution atmosphere में harmful gases, particulate matter और biological molecules का presence है।

Major Pollutants:

  • Primary Pollutants: Directly emitted — CO, SO₂, NOx, PM2.5, PM10, VOCs
  • Secondary Pollutants: Formed from reactions — Ozone (O₃), Smog, Acid rain

Sources:

  • Fossil fuel burning (vehicles, industries)
  • Industrial emissions
  • Agricultural activities
  • Deforestation
  • Natural sources (volcanoes, dust storms)

Effects:

  • Respiratory diseases (asthma, bronchitis)
  • Global warming and climate change
  • Acid rain (damages buildings, forests, water bodies)
  • Ozone layer depletion

Water Pollution — जल प्रदूषण

Water Pollution water bodies (rivers, lakes, oceans, groundwater) में contaminants का introduction है जो water quality degrade करता है।

Sources:

  • Industrial effluents (chemicals, heavy metals)
  • Agricultural runoff (fertilizers, pesticides, manure)
  • Domestic sewage (organic matter, pathogens)
  • Oil spills
  • Plastic waste

Effects:

  • Waterborne diseases (cholera, typhoid, dysentery)

Noise Pollution — ध्वनि प्रदूषण

Noise Pollution unwanted or excessive sound है जो human health और environment को adversely affect करता है।

Sources:

  • Household appliances

Measured in: Decibels (dB)

Effects:

  • Hearing loss

Solid Waste — ठोस अपशिष्ट

  • Municipal Solid Waste (MSW): Household, commercial, institutional waste

Biomedical Waste healthcare activities (hospitals, clinics, laboratories, research) से उत्पन्न होने वाला waste है — which may be infectious, hazardous, or toxic.

Types:

  • Infectious Waste: Blood, body fluids, cultures, sharps
  • Pathological Waste: Tissues, organs, body parts
  • Sharp Waste: Needles, syringes, scalpels
  • Pharmaceutical Waste: Expired medicines
  • Chemical Waste: Laboratory chemicals
  • Radioactive Waste: Radioactive materials

Disposal Methods:

E-waste — ई-अपशिष्ट

E-waste (Electronic Waste) discarded electrical and electronic equipment (EEEE) है — which contains hazardous and valuable materials.

Examples:

  • Computers, laptops, mobile phones
  • TVs, monitors, refrigerators
  • Printers, scanners, copiers
  • Batteries, chargers
  • Wires, cables, circuit boards

Hazardous Components:

  • Lead, Mercury, Cadmium
  • Arsenic, Chromium
  • Brominated flame retardants
  • PVC plastics

Recycling/Management:

  • Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR)
  • Dismantling and segregation
  • Recovery of precious metals (gold, silver, copper)
  • Safe disposal of hazardous components

Waste Management Hierarchy — अपशिष्ट प्रबंधन पदानुक्रम

Waste Management Hierarchy waste management का priority order है — from most preferred to least preferred.

Waste Hierarchy = Prevent → Reduce → Reuse → Recycle → Recover → Disposal
  • Prevention — निवारण: Avoid generating waste (most preferred)
  • Reduction — कमी: Reduce the amount of waste produced
  • Reuse — पुन:उपयोग: Use items again without processing
  • Recycle — पुनर्चक्रण: Process waste into new products
  • Recovery — पुन:प्राप्ति: Energy recovery (incineration with energy recovery)
  • Disposal — निपटान: Landfilling, incineration without recovery (least preferred)

Key Principle: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (3R's)

BOD, COD & DO — BOD, COD और DO

  • BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand) — जैव-रासायनिक ऑक्सीजन माँग: Oxygen की वह मात्रा जो microorganisms organic matter को decompose करने के लिए consume करते हैं। Higher BOD = more organic pollution.
  • COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) — रासायनिक ऑक्सीजन माँग: Oxygen की वह मात्रा जो chemical oxidation के लिए required है। COD > BOD (because chemical oxidation is more complete).
  • DO (Dissolved Oxygen) — विघटित ऑक्सीजन: Water में dissolved oxygen की मात्रा। Higher DO = clean water. Lower DO = polluted water.

Key Relationships:

  • High BOD → Low DO → Polluted water
  • Low BOD → High DO → Clean water
  • COD > BOD (always)

Eutrophication — सुपोषण

Eutrophication water body में excess nutrients (especially nitrogen and phosphorus) के accumulation से algal blooms की process है — leading to oxygen depletion and death of aquatic life.

Eutrophication = Excess Nutrients → Algal Bloom → Oxygen Depletion → Death of Aquatic Life

Stages:

  • Nutrient enrichment (from fertilisers, sewage)
  • Algal bloom (excessive growth of algae)
  • Algae die and decompose
  • Decomposition consumes oxygen (BOD increases)
  • DO decreases → fish and other organisms die

Causes:

  • Agricultural runoff (fertilisers, manure)
  • Domestic sewage
  • Industrial effluents
  • Detergents (phosphates)

Biomagnification — जैव-आवर्धन

Biomagnification (Bioamplification) toxic substances (especially pesticides, heavy metals) का concentration increasing होता है as they move up the food chain.

Biomagnification = Increasing Toxin Concentration at Higher Trophic Levels

Key Points:

  • Starts at the lowest trophic level (producers)
  • Concentration increases at each trophic level
  • Top consumers have the highest concentration
  • DDT and Mercury are classic examples

Example (DDT):

  • Water → DDT concentration: 0.003 ppm
  • Phytoplankton → 0.04 ppm
  • Zooplankton → 0.16 ppm
  • Small fish → 0.5 ppm
  • Large fish → 2.0 ppm
  • Birds (top consumer) → 25 ppm

Difference from Bioaccumulation:

  • Bioaccumulation: Toxin accumulation within a single organism over time
  • Biomagnification: Toxin concentration increases along the food chain
