Human–Environment Interaction humans और environment के बीच mutual relationship है — humans environment को modify करते हैं और environment humans को influence करता है।

Anthropogenic Activities — मानवजनित गतिविधियाँ

Anthropogenic Activities humans द्वारा की गई वे activities हैं जो environment को impact करती हैं।

Anthropogenic = Human-Induced + Environmental Impact

Major Anthropogenic Activities:

  • Deforestation — वनोन्मूलन: Clearing forests for agriculture, urbanisation, industries
  • Industrialisation — औद्योगीकरण: Air, water, land pollution; resource depletion
  • Urbanisation — नगरीकरण: Land use change, heat island effect, waste generation
  • Agriculture — कृषि: Use of fertilisers, pesticides, irrigation, monoculture
  • Fossil Fuel Burning — जीवाश्म ईंधन जलाना: CO₂ emissions, air pollution, climate change

Development = Economic Growth + Social Progress (but may impact environment)

Sustainable Development — सतत विकास

Sustainable Development वह development है जो present generation की needs को future generations की ability से समझौता किए बिना पूरा करता है।

Sustainable Development = Present Needs + Future Generations + Balance

Brundtland Report (1987):

  • First defined sustainable development
  • Report of the World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED)
  • Also known as "Our Common Future"

Three Pillars of Sustainable Development:

  • Economic — आर्थिक: Growth, efficiency, innovation
  • Social — सामाजिक: Equity, inclusion, participation
  • Environmental — पर्यावरणीय: Conservation, resource management

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 17 global goals हैं — adopted by UN in 2015 — to be achieved by 2030.

Intergenerational Equity — अंतर-पीढ़ी न्याय

Intergenerational Equity का अर्थ है present generation को environment और resources का उपयोग इस प्रकार करना चाहिए कि future generations भी अपनी needs पूरी कर सकें।

Intergenerational Equity = Fairness between Present and Future Generations

Key Points:

  • Resources should be sustainable — not exhausted
  • Environment should be protected for future
  • Future generations should have same opportunities

Intragenerational Equity — अंतर-पीढ़ी न्याय (वर्तमान)

Intragenerational Equity का अर्थ है current generation के भीतर fairness and justice — resources और benefits का equitable distribution.

Intragenerational Equity = Fairness within the Present Generation

Key Points:

  • Resources should be equitably shared among all people
  • Developing and developed countries should have fair responsibility
  • Marginalised and vulnerable groups should be protected
  • Climate justice is part of intragenerational equity

Carrying Capacity — वहन क्षमता

Carrying Capacity किसी environment की maximum population size है जिसे वह sustain कर सकता है — बिना degradation के।

Carrying Capacity = Maximum Population + Resources + Sustainability

Key Points:

  • Determined by resources (food, water, space)
  • Exceeding carrying capacity leads to degradation
  • Human activities can increase or decrease carrying capacity
  • Population growth must respect carrying capacity

Polluter Pays Principle — प्रदूषक भुगतान सिद्धांत

Polluter Pays Principle (PPP) के अनुसार जो pollutes (प्रदूषण फैलाता है) उसे cost (cleanup, compensation, damage) भी वहन करनी चाहिए।

PPP = Polluter + Pays + Cost

Key Points:

  • Polluter should bear the cost of pollution
  • Encourages prevention and cleaner technologies
  • Internalises external costs
  • Recognised in environmental law (national and international)

Precautionary Principle — एहतियाती सिद्धांत

Precautionary Principle के अनुसार यदि किसी activity से environmental harm का risk है, तो scientific certainty न होने पर भी preventive measures लिए जाने चाहिए।

Precautionary Principle = Risk + Uncertainty + Prevention

Key Points:

  • Lack of scientific certainty is not an excuse for inaction
  • Preventive action should be taken before damage occurs
  • Burden of proof lies with the proponent (activity proposer)
  • Widely used in environmental policy and climate change

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) — पर्यावरणीय प्रभाव आकलन

EIA एक process है जो किसी proposed project/activity के environmental consequences का assessment करता है — before approval.

EIA = Project + Impact Assessment + Mitigation + Decision

Steps:

  • Screening: Whether EIA is required
  • Scoping: Which impacts to study
  • Impact Assessment: Identifying and predicting impacts
  • Mitigation: Measures to reduce negative impacts
  • Reporting: EIA report/document
  • Review: Independent review of EIA
