Introduction to Fallacies — तर्कदोष का परिचय
Fallacy reasoning में एक error है जो argument को invalid, weak, या unconvincing बनाता है।
Two Main Types:
- Formal Fallacies — रूपगत तर्कदोष: Errors in the logical structure of a deductive argument.
- Informal Fallacies — अनौपचारिक तर्कदोष: Errors in content, language, or context rather than structure.
Formal Fallacies — रूपगत तर्कदोष
Formal fallacies occur when there is a structural flaw in a deductive argument — the conclusion does not logically follow from the premises.
- Undistributed Middle
- Illicit Major
- Illicit Minor
- Exclusive Premises
- Negative/Affirmative Conclusion Errors
- Two Particular Premises
Undistributed Middle — अवितरित मध्य पद
The middle term (M) is not distributed in either premise.
Example:
- All dogs (M) are animals (P).
- All cats (S) are animals (M).
- Therefore, all cats (S) are dogs (P).
Analysis: M is the predicate in both premises → not distributed in either → invalid.
Illicit Major — अवैध प्रमुख पद
The Major Term (P) is distributed in the conclusion but not distributed in the major premise.
Example:
- All cats are animals. (Major Premise — P=animals, not distributed)
- No dogs are cats. (Minor Premise)
- Therefore, no dogs are animals. (Conclusion — P=animals, distributed)
Illicit Minor — अवैध गौण पद
The Minor Term (S) is distributed in the conclusion but not distributed in the minor premise.
Example:
- All cats are animals. (Major Premise)
- All cats are mammals. (Minor Premise — S=cats, distributed)
- Therefore, all mammals are animals. (Conclusion — S=mammals, distributed but not in minor premise)
Exclusive Premises — दो नकारात्मक आधार
Both premises are negative (E or O).
Example:
- No cats are dogs. (E)
- No animals are cats. (E)
- Therefore, no animals are dogs. (Invalid)
Negative/Affirmative Conclusion Errors — नकारात्मक/सकारात्मक निष्कर्ष त्रुटि
- If either premise is negative, conclusion must be negative.
- If both premises are affirmative, conclusion must be affirmative.
Example (Negative premise → Affirmative conclusion):
- No cats are dogs. (Negative)
- All animals are cats. (Affirmative)
- Therefore, all animals are dogs. (Affirmative — ❌ Invalid)
Two Particular Premises — दो विशेष आधार
Both premises are particular (I or O).
Example:
- Some cats are animals. (I)
- Some dogs are cats. (I)
- Therefore, some dogs are animals. (Invalid)
Conditional Fallacies — सशर्त तर्कदोष
Conditional fallacies occur in arguments with if...then (conditional) statements.
- Affirming the Consequent
- Denying the Antecedent
Affirming Consequent — परिणामी की पुष्टि
Structure:
- If it rains (P), then the ground is wet (Q).
- The ground is wet (Q).
- Therefore, it rained (P).
Analysis: The ground could be wet for other reasons (sprinkler, etc.). This is invalid.
Denying Antecedent — पूर्वपद का निषेध
Structure:
- If it rains (P), then the ground is wet (Q).
- It does not rain (P is false).
- Therefore, the ground is not wet (Q is false).
Analysis: The ground could still be wet (sprinkler, etc.). This is invalid.
Informal Fallacies — अनौपचारिक तर्कदोष
Informal fallacies occur due to content, language, ambiguity, or emotional manipulation rather than logical structure.
- Relevance Fallacies — Ad Hominem, Appeal to Authority, Ad Populum, Ad Misericordiam, Ad Baculum, Ad Ignorantiam, Straw Man, Red Herring
- Inductive Fallacies — Hasty Generalisation, False Cause/Post Hoc, Slippery Slope
- Presumption Fallacies — False Dilemma, Begging the Question, Circular Reasoning
- Ambiguity Fallacies — Equivocation, Amphiboly, Composition, Division
Ad Hominem — व्यक्ति-आघात
Attacking the person making the argument rather than the argument itself.
Example:
- "You can't trust his argument about climate change because he drives a big car."
- Whether he drives a big car is irrelevant to the truth of his argument.
Ad Populum — लोकप्रियता का आधार
Claiming something is true because many people believe it or it is popular.
Example:
- "Everyone knows that the earth is flat, so it must be true."
- Popular belief does not make something true.
Ad Misericordiam — दया का आधार
Appealing to pity or sympathy to support a conclusion.
Example:
- "You should give me the job because I have a family to support."
- While it may be sad, it does not prove you are qualified.
Ad Baculum — बल/धमकी का आधार
Using threats or fear to make someone accept a conclusion.
Example:
- "If you don't agree with me, I will make your life difficult."
- This does not make the argument true.
Ad Ignorantiam — अज्ञानता का आधार
Claiming something is true because it hasn't been proven false, or false because it hasn't been proven true.
Example:
- "No one has proven that ghosts don't exist, so they must exist."
- Lack of evidence against something does not prove it.
Straw Man — पुआल आदमी
Misrepresenting or oversimplifying someone's argument to make it easier to attack.
Example:
- Person A: "We should invest more in education."
- Person B: "So you want to ignore healthcare and infrastructure?"
- Person B misrepresents Person A's argument.
Red Herring — ध्यान-भटकाव
Introducing irrelevant information to distract from the main issue.
Example:
- When asked about rising crime rates, a politician starts talking about the economy.
- This is irrelevant to the crime rate question.
Hasty Generalisation — अतिशीघ्र सामान्यीकरण
Drawing a general conclusion from a small or unrepresentative sample.
Example:
- "I met two rude people from that city, so everyone there is rude."
- Two people are not enough to represent a whole city.
False Cause / Post Hoc — कारण-भ्रम / पश्चात-अतः
Assuming that because one event happened after another, the first event caused the second.
Example:
- "I wore my lucky shirt and we won the game, so the shirt caused the win."
- Correlation/timing does not equal causation.
Slippery Slope — फिसलन-ढाल
Arguing that one action will inevitably lead to a chain of negative events without evidence.
Example:
- "If we allow students to use calculators, soon they will forget how to do basic math, and eventually they won't be able to think at all."
- This is an unsupported chain of events.
False Dilemma — कूट दुविधा
Presenting only two options when there are actually more.
Example:
- "You are either with us or against us."
- There are many possible positions in between.
Begging the Question — प्रश्न-भीख
Assuming what you are trying to prove. The conclusion is already assumed in the premises.
Example:
- "The book is true because it says it is true."
- The conclusion is assumed in the premise.
Circular Reasoning — वृत्ताकार तर्क
Similar to begging the question — the conclusion is used to support the premises in a circle.
Example:
- "I am trustworthy because I always tell the truth. I always tell the truth because I am trustworthy."
- This reasoning goes in a circle.
Equivocation — समशब्द-भ्रम
Using the same word in different meanings within an argument.
Example:
- "A feather is light. What is light cannot be dark. Therefore, a feather cannot be dark."
- "Light" means weight in the first use and brightness in the second.
Amphiboly — अस्पष्ट वाक्य-भ्रम
Ambiguous sentence structure leading to multiple interpretations.
Example:
- "I saw the man with the telescope."
- Did I use the telescope to see the man, or did the man have the telescope?
Composition — संयोजन-भ्रम
Assuming that what is true of the parts is also true of the whole.
Example:
- "Each player on the team is excellent, so the team must be excellent."
- Individual excellence does not guarantee team success.
Division — विभाजन-भ्रम
Assuming that what is true of the whole is also true of the parts.
Example:
- "The team is the best in the league, so every player on the team must be the best in the league."
- A team can be great without every player being individually great.
Common Exam Traps — सामान्य परीक्षा जाल
- Trap 1: Ad Hominem = only personal insults → ❌ It includes attacking character, motives, or circumstances.
- Trap 2: Appeal to Authority = always fallacious → ❌ It's only fallacious when the authority is not relevant or credible.
- Trap 3: Ad Populum = majority rule → ❌ Popularity does not prove truth.
- Trap 4: Post Hoc = causation → ❌ Temporal sequence does not prove causation.
- Trap 5: Slippery Slope = always fallacious → ❌ It is fallacious only when the chain of events is unsupported.
- Trap 6: False Dilemma = only two options → ❌ Usually more than two options exist.
- Trap 7: Equivocation = same word → ❌ Same word with different meanings.
