Vyāpti (व्याप्ति) — Invariable Concomitance

Vyāpti = The universal and invariable relationship between the hetu (reason) and sādhya (inferred). It is the foundation of inference (anumāna).

Vyāpti = Universal Relation between Hetu and Sādhya

Key Points:

  • Vyāpti is the logical ground that makes inference possible.
  • It is a necessary relation — wherever hetu is present, sādhya must be present.
  • Without vyāpti, no valid inference can be drawn.
  • It is established through repeated observation (anvaya) and absence (vyatireka).

Example:

  • Vyāpti: Wherever there is smoke, there is fire.
  • This universal relation allows us to infer fire from smoke.

Anvaya & Vyatireka — अन्वय एवं व्यतिरेक

  • Anvaya (अन्वय) — Positive Concomitance: The positive relationship — wherever hetu is present, sādhya is also present. (e.g., Where there is smoke, there is fire.)
  • Vyatireka (व्यतिरेक) — Negative Concomitance: The negative relationship — wherever sādhya is absent, hetu is also absent. (e.g., Where there is no fire, there is no smoke.)
Anvaya = Presence of Hetu → Presence of Sādhya
Vyatireka = Absence of Sādhya → Absence of Hetu

Example:

  • Anvaya: In a kitchen, there is smoke and fire (positive instance).
  • Vyatireka: In a lake, there is no fire and no smoke (negative instance).

Together: Both anvaya and vyatireka establish vyāpti.

Upādhi (उपाधि) — Condition

Upādhi = A condition that restricts or limits the vyāpti between hetu and sādhya. It is a factor that must be present for the relation to hold.

Upādhi = Limiting Condition of Vyāpti

Key Points:

  • If there is an upādhi, the vyāpti is not universal.
  • A valid vyāpti must be free from upādhi.
  • Upādhi can vitiate (make invalid) the inference.

Example:

  • If we say "Wherever there is smoke, there is fire" — is there any condition? No, it's universal.
  • But if we say "Wherever there is a wet ground, it has rained" — there could be other conditions (sprinkler) → wet ground is not universally concomitant with rain.

Hetvābhāsa (हेत्वाभास) — Fallacies of Reason

Hetvābhāsa = A fallacy of the hetu (reason) — when the reason appears to be valid but is actually invalid or defective. It is the Indian logical equivalent of a formal fallacy.

Hetvābhāsa = Defective/False Reason

Five Types of Hetvābhāsa:

  • 1. Savyabhicāra / Anaikāntika — अनियत
  • 2. Viruddha — विरुद्ध
  • 3. Satpratipakṣa — सत्प्रतिपक्ष
  • 4. Asiddha — असिद्ध
  • 5. Bādhita — बाधित

Savyabhicāra / Anaikāntika (अनियत) — Irregular/Inconsistent

Savyabhicāra (or Anaikāntika) = The hetu is not uniformly related to the sādhya — it is too wide or inconsistent.

Savyabhicāra = Hetu present where Sādhya is absent

Key Point: The hetu is not invariably concomitant with the sādhya.

Example:

  • Inferring "This is a swan because it is white" — but white things are not always swans (clouds, milk, etc. are white).
  • The hetu "whiteness" is present in many things other than swans → Savyabhicāra.

Viruddha (विरुद्ध) — Contradictory

Viruddha = The hetu contradicts the sādhya — it proves the opposite of what is intended.

Viruddha = Hetu proves the Opposite of Sādhya

Key Point: The hetu is inconsistent with the sādhya.

Example:

  • Inferring "This object is permanent because it is produced" — but produced things are impermanent.
  • The hetu "produced" actually proves the opposite (impermanence) → Viruddha.

Satpratipakṣa (सत्प्रतिपक्ष) — Counterbalanced

Satpratipakṣa = There is another equally valid reason that proves the opposite conclusion.

Satpratipakṣa = Equal Reason for Opposite Conclusion

Key Point: The hetu is countered by another valid hetu.

Example:

  • Argument 1: Sound is eternal because it is perceptible (like atoms).
  • Counter-argument: Sound is non-eternal because it is produced (like a pot).
  • Both are equally valid → Satpratipakṣa (neither is decisive).

Asiddha (असिद्ध) — Unproved

Asiddha = The hetu itself is not established or not accepted — the reason is unproved.

Asiddha = Hetu is Unproved / Not Established

Key Point: The hetu is not known to exist in the pakṣa.

Example:

  • Inferring "This hill has fire because it has smoke" — but if the hill is not known to have smoke, the hetu is asiddha.
  • Inferring "Sound is eternal because it is visible" — sound is not visible, so the hetu is unproved.

Sub-types:

  • Svarūpāsiddha: The hetu itself does not exist in the pakṣa.
  • Viparyayāsiddha: The hetu exists but is not known.

Bādhita (बाधित) — Contradicted

Bādhita = The sādhya is contradicted by a stronger valid means of knowledge (pramāṇa).

Bādhita = Sādhya Contradicted by Stronger Pramāṇa

Key Point: The conclusion is already known to be false by a stronger source of knowledge.

Example:

  • Inferring "Fire is cold because it is a substance" — but perception directly tells us fire is hot.
  • The sādhya (fire is cold) is contradicted by direct perception → Bādhita.

Common Exam Traps — सामान्य परीक्षा जाल

  • Trap 1: Vyāpti = anvaya only → ❌ Vyāpti is established by both anvaya (positive) and vyatireka (negative).
  • Trap 2: Upādhi = always a defect → ❌ Upādhi is a condition; if present, it makes vyāpti invalid, but it's not a fallacy itself.
  • Trap 3: Savyabhicāra = contradictory → ❌ It is irregular/inconsistent, not contradictory (that's viruddha).
  • Trap 4: Viruddha = counterbalanced → ❌ It is contradictory (proves opposite). Satpratipakṣa is counterbalanced.
  • Trap 5: Asiddha = already contradicted → ❌ Asiddha = unproved; Bādhita = contradicted.
  • Trap 6: Bādhita = unproved reason → ❌ Bādhita = conclusion contradicted by stronger pramāṇa.
  • Trap 7: Satpratipakṣa = invalid inference → ❌ It means there is an equally valid counter-argument, not that the argument itself is invalid.
