Unit 6: Logical Reasoning — Full Notes

Complete Unit 6 tutorial: arguments, deductive-inductive reasoning, categorical propositions, square of opposition, syllogism, fallacies, Indian logic, Hetvābhāsa & PYQs.

1

Unit Overview

  • UGC NET/JRF एवं Assistant Professor Paper-1 | December 2026

  • Western/Aristotelian Logic — Arguments, categorical propositions, mood–figure, fallacies, analogy और Venn diagrams
  • Indian Logic — Pramāṇas, Anumāna, Vyāpti और Hetvābhāsa
Logical Reasoning = Premises + Logical Relation + Conclusion
PART A: ARGUMENTS
2

1

Argument

  • Supporting statements = Premises
  • Supported statement = Conclusion

Example: All researchers are critical thinkers. Ravi is a researcher. Therefore, Ravi is a critical thinker.

  • Major premise: All researchers are critical thinkers.
  • Minor premise: Ravi is a researcher.
  • Conclusion: Ravi is a critical thinker.
Argument = Premise(s) → Conclusion
2

3

Premise और Conclusion Indicators

Premise Indicators: Because, Since, Given that, For, As indicated by,

Conclusion Indicators: Therefore, Hence, Thus, Consequently, It follows that,

4

Proposition और Sentence

Example: "Delhi is the capital of India."

PART B: DEDUCTIVE AND INDUCTIVE REASONING
3

Deductive and Inductive Reasoning

1

Deductive Reasoning —

General Rule → Specific Conclusion

Example: All mammals are warm-blooded. Whales are mammals. Therefore, whales are warm-blooded।

Valid/Invalid, Sound/Unsound

2

Validity और Soundness

Validity concerns logical form, not actual truth.

Valid लेकिन Unsound — Example: All birds are mammals. All dogs are birds. Therefore, all dogs are mammals.

Sound = Valid Form + All True Premises
ConceptMeaning
Truth/FalsityIndividual proposition की property
Validity/InvalidityDeductive argument की property
SoundnessValid argument + true premises

Exam Trap: Proposition valid/invalid नहीं होती; true/false होती है। Argument true/false नहीं, valid/invalid कहा जाता है।

3

Inductive Reasoning —

Specific Observations → Probable Generalisation

Evaluation: Inductive argument: Strong/Weak, Cogent/Uncogent

Cogent = Strong Inductive Argument + True Premises
4

SupportNecessaryProbable
EvaluationValid/invalidStrong/weak
Good argumentSoundCogent
ExampleSyllogismGeneralisation/prediction

Most Important Trap: General-to-particular

PART C: CATEGORICAL PROPOSITIONS
4

Categorical Propositions —

1

Categorical Proposition

Standard Form = Quantifier + Subject Term + Copula + Predicate Term

Example: All teachers are learners. — Quantifier: All; Subject: Teachers; Copula: Are; Predicate: Learners

2

Quantity और Quality

Universal (सभी), Particular (कुछ)

Affirmative, Negative

3

Four Standard Categorical Propositions: A–E–I–O

SymbolStandard FormQuantityQuality
AAll S are PUniversalAffirmative
ENo S are PUniversalNegative
ISome S are PParticularAffirmative
OSome S are not PParticularNegative
A–I = Affirmative; E–O = Negative (AffIrmo: A,I | NEgO: E,O)
4

Distribution of Terms

PropositionSubjectPredicate
A: All S are PDistributedUndistributed
E: No S are PDistributedDistributed
I: Some S are PUndistributedUndistributed
O: Some S are not PUndistributedDistributed
A distributes S; E distributes both; I distributes none; O distributes P

Example: "All teachers are educated." Teacher distributed; Educated undistributed।

5

"Only A are B" → All B are A। Example: "Only graduates are eligible" → "All eligible persons are graduates."

"None but A are B" → All B are A

"Not all S are P" → Some S are not P — O proposition

"All S are not P" → No S are P — E proposition (natural-language ambiguity से बचते हुए standard categorical interpretation)

Some S are P imply करता है; natural language में यह "some S are not P" भी suggest कर सकता है; exam में context/options देखें।

PART D: IMMEDIATE INFERENCES
5

Immediate Inferences

1

Conversion

Valid Simple Conversion: E: No S are P → No P are S; I: Some S are P → Some P are S

Conversion by Limitation: Traditional logic में A: All S are P → Some P are S (यह existential import पर depend करता है)

O Proposition: O का valid conversion नहीं।

2

Obversion

1. Quality बदलें। 2. Obversion चारों forms — A, E, I, O — के लिए valid है।

OriginalObverse
All S are PNo S are non-P
No S are PAll S are non-P
Some S are PSome S are not non-P
Some S are not PSome S are non-P
3

Contraposition

1. Subject और predicate interchange करें। 2.

Valid: A proposition, O proposition

Limited/Invalid in Standard Form: E by limitation in traditional treatment; I invalid

Example: All humans are mortal. → Contrapositive: All non-mortals are non-humans.

PART E: SQUARE OF OPPOSITION
6

Square of Opposition —

A: All S are P, E: No S are P, I: Some S are P, O: Some S are not P

1

Contradictory Relation

Pairs: A ↔ O, E ↔ I

Contradiction = Cannot both be true and cannot both be false
2

Contrary Relation

Contrary = Cannot both be true; may both be false

Example: "All students are honest." और "No student is honest."

3

Subcontrary Relation

Subcontrary = Cannot both be false; may both be true
4

Subalternation

Relations: A → I, E → O. Universal = Superaltern; Particular = Subaltern

Truth flows downward; falsity flows upward

Modern Logic Caution: Traditional square universal propositions को existential import देती है। Modern Boolean interpretation में A और E से automatically existence imply नहीं होती।

5

Square of Opposition Summary

RelationPairRule
ContradictoryA–O, E–Iन दोनों true, न दोनों false
SubalternationA–I, E–OTruth down, falsity up
PART F: CATEGORICAL SYLLOGISM
7

Categorical Syllogism

1

Categorical Syllogism

तीन categorical propositions वाला deductive argument: Major premise, Minor premise, Conclusion। और तीन terms: Major Term (P), Minor Term (S), Middle Term (M)

Identification: Major Term = Conclusion का predicate। Minor Term = Conclusion का subject।

Example: All researchers are readers. All scholars are researchers. Therefore, all scholars are readers. — S = Scholars, P = Readers, M = Researchers

2

Mood

Major premise, minor premise और conclusion के A/E/I/O forms का क्रम।

Example: All M are P (A); All S are M (A); All S are P (A) → Mood: AAA

Mood is determined by quantity and quality of the three propositions
3

Figure

FigureMajor PremiseMinor Premise
1M–PS–M
2P–MS–M
3M–PM–S
4P–MM–S

Example: All mammals are animals. All dogs are mammals. Therefore, all dogs are animals. — Mood = AAA, Figure = 1, Form = AAA-1

4

Validity Rules of Categorical Syllogism

  • 1. Exactly three terms
  • 9. Modern Boolean interpretation में two universal premises से particular conclusion निकालना existential fallacy हो सकता है।
PART G: FORMAL FALLACIES
8

Formal Fallacies —

1

Formal Fallacy

Example: All dogs are animals. All cats are animals. Therefore, all cats are dogs.
No A are B. No C are B. Therefore… — Valid relation establish नहीं होती।
  • Affirmative Conclusion from Negative Premise:
  • Negative Conclusion from Affirmative Premises:
  • Two Particular Premises: दो particular premises valid syllogistic conclusion नहीं देतीं।
  • Existential Fallacy: Modern Boolean logic में universal premises से particular conclusion निकालना, जब existence assumed न हो।
2

Conditional Argument Fallacies

Affirming the Consequent — Example:

Denying the Antecedent — Example:

PART H: INFORMAL FALLACIES
9

Informal Fallacies —

Language, relevance, evidence या assumptions में error।

FallacyMeaning / Example
Appeal to Popularity (Ad Populum)
Appeal to Pity (Ad Misericordiam)Evidence
Appeal to Force (Ad Baculum)Threat
Slippery Slopeबिना adequate evidence छोटे first step से extreme chain of consequences predict करना।
Feathers are light. Therefore, feathers cannot be dark."
PART I: USES OF LANGUAGE
10

Uses of Language

1

Functions of Language

2

Denotation and Connotation

Connotation: Term द्वारा implied attributes/qualities।

Example: Person → Educated person → Educated Indian person → Educated Indian researcher (Attributes बढ़े, applicable members कम हुए)

3

Terms

TypeMeaningExample
Positive Termकिसी quality की presenceHonest
Negative TermQuality की absenceDishonest, non-living
Absolute TermIndependent meaningTeacher
Relative TermRelationship पर आधारितParent, teacher, employer
Concrete TermObject/personScientist
Abstract TermQuality/stateScientificness, honesty
Committee, army
PART J: ANALOGY
11

Analogy —

1

Analogy

A : B :: C : D

Synonym, Antonym, Part–whole, Cause–effect, Tool–function, Worker–workplace, Degree, Classification, Number relationship

Example: Doctor : Hospital :: Teacher : School

2

Analogical Argument की Strength

  • Relevant similarities
  • Differences कितनी significant हैं?
  • Cases

PART K: VENN DIAGRAMS
12

Venn Diagrams

1

Venn Diagram

2

A, E, I, O का Venn Representation

A: All S are P — S (S ⊆ P)

E: No S are P — S और P के overlap को shade करें। (S ∩ P = ∅)

I: Some S are P — S–P overlap में X रखें।

O: Some S are not P — S

3

Syllogism की Validity by Venn Diagram

Example: All M are P. All S are M. Therefore, all S are P. — Premises diagram

PART L: INDIAN LOGIC
13

Indian Logic —

1

Pramā, Apramā and Pramāṇa

Pramāṇa → Pramā → Valid Knowledge
2

Six Major Pramāṇas

  • 1. Pratyakṣa — Perception
  • 2. Anumāna — Inference
  • 3. Upamāna — Comparison
  • 4. Śabda — Verbal Testimony
  • 5. Arthāpatti — Postulation/Implication
  • 6. Anupalabdhi — Non-apprehension
Recall: P–A–U–Ś–A–A → Pratyakṣa → Anumāna → Upamāna → Śabda → Arthāpatti → Anupalabdhi
3

Schools और Accepted Pramāṇas

Pramāṇas
Cārvākaकेवल Pratyakṣa
BuddhismPratyakṣa और Anumāna
VaiśeṣikaPratyakṣa और Anumāna
SāṃkhyaPratyakṣa, Anumāna, Śabda
YogaPratyakṣa, Anumāna, Śabda
NyāyaPratyakṣa, Anumāna, Upamāna, Śabda
Bhāṭṭa Mīmāṃsā
Advaita Vedānta

4

Pratyakṣa — प्रत्यक्ष / Perception

Sense-object contact से उत्पन्न immediate knowledge।

External Perception — पाँच external senses: Eyes (Form/colour), Ears (Sound), Nose (Smell), Tongue (Taste), Skin (Touch)

Internal Perception — Mind द्वारा internal states का perception: Pleasure, Pain, Desire, Cognition

Stages: Nirvikalpaka — Indeterminate, pre-conceptual perception। Savikalpaka — Determinate perception। Pratyabhijñā — Recognition: "यह वही व्यक्ति है जिसे मैंने पहले देखा था।"

5

Classic Example: Mountain has smoke. Wherever there is smoke, there is fire. Therefore, mountain has fire.

TermMeaningExample
PakṣaSubject under considerationMountain
SādhyaProbandum — to be provedFire
Hetu/LiṅgaReason/signSmoke
VyāptiInvariable relationWherever smoke, there fire
SapakṣaSimilar positive instancesKitchen
VipakṣaNegative instancesLake
PakṣadharmatāHetu present in pakṣaSmoke is on mountain
6

Types of Anumāna

Purpose के आधार पर: Svārthānumāna — Inference for oneself। Parārthānumāna — Inference formally presented for another person।

Anumāna = Svārtha + Parārtha

7

Nyāya Five-Member Syllogism —

  • 1. Pratijñā — Proposition: The mountain has fire.
  • 2. Hetu — Reason: Because it has smoke.
  • 3. Udāharaṇa — Universal Rule with Example: Wherever there is smoke, there is fire, as in a kitchen.
  • 4. Upanaya — Application: The mountain has such smoke.
  • 5. Nigamana — Conclusion: Therefore, the mountain has fire.
Pratijñā → Hetu → Udāharaṇa → Upanaya → Nigamana
8

Wherever there is smoke, there is fire

Vyāpya — pervaded/sign: Smoke। Vyāpaka — pervader: Fire।

Anvaya (Positive concomitance): Where smoke is present, fire is present. Vyatireka (Negative concomitance): Where fire is absent, smoke is absent.

Laukika — Trustworthy ordinary person का testimony।

Exam Trap: हर spoken statement Śabda-pramāṇa नहीं; testimony reliable होना चाहिए।

11

Classic Example: Devadatta

Arthāpatti = Necessary Postulation to Explain Otherwise Inexplicable Facts

Anupalabdhi = Knowledge of Absence through Non-perception

PART M: HETVĀBHĀSA
14

Hetvābhāsa —

1

Hetvābhāsa

Hetvābhāsa = Fallacious Middle/Defective Reason
2

Savyabhicāra/Anaikāntika —

Hetu Sādhya से invariably connected नहीं। Example: Mountain has fire because it is knowable — "Knowable" fire

3

Viruddha —

Example: Sound is eternal because it is produced — Produced

5

Asiddha —

Hetu itself established नहीं। प्रकार: Āśrayāsiddha — Pakṣa itself unreal/non-existent (Sky-lotus is fragrant because it is a lotus)। Svarūpāsiddha — Hetu pakṣa में present नहीं (Sound is visible because it has colour)।

6

Bādhita —

Conclusion stronger knowledge/pramāṇa से contradicted है। Example: Fire is cold because it is a substance — Direct perception fire

7

Hetvābhāsa Quick Comparison

Hetvābhāsa
SavyabhicāraHetu irregular/inconclusive
ViruddhaHetu opposite conclusion
SatpratipakṣaCounter-reason opposite conclusion support
PART N: EXAM TRAPS
15

Exam Traps

  • 19. Arthāpatti = necessary postulation।
  • 20. Anupalabdhi = absence का knowledge।
  • 21. Vyāpti = invariable relation।
  • 22. Hetu smoke, Sādhya fire और Pakṣa mountain है।
