Research का अर्थ Meaning of Research

Research किसी question, problem या phenomenon की systematic, objective, logical और evidence-based investigation है, जिसका उद्देश्य new knowledge विकसित करना, existing knowledge verify करना या किसी problem का credible solution प्राप्त करना है।

Research = Re-search नहीं, बल्कि Systematic Search for Meaning and Evidence

Research में researcher:

  • Problem identify
  • Relevant literature
  • Appropriate method
  • Data collect
  • Evidence-based conclusion

Exam-Oriented Definition

DefinitionResearch is a systematic and critical investigation undertaken to answer a question, understand a phenomenon, verify knowledge or provide a credible solution to a problem.

Ordinary InquiryScientific Research
Planned methodology
Verifiable and open to scrutiny
Evidence-based conclusion
3

4

Characteristics of Good Research

Systematic —

Research predefined logical process follow

Problem → Literature → Questions/Hypothesis → Method → Data → Analysis → Conclusion

Logical —

  • Deductive Reasoning: Theory → Hypothesis → Data → Testing
  • Inductive Reasoning: Observations → Patterns → Concepts → Theory

Empirical —

Objective —

Objectivity improve करने के methods: Clear operational definitions, Standardised tools, Transparent procedures, Multiple researchers, Blind assessment, Triangulation, Reflexivity।

Verifiable —

Replicable —

Controlled —

Critical

Researcher assumptions, evidence, limitations और alternative explanations को critically examine करता है।

Ethical

Good research में आवश्यक हैं: Informed consent, Voluntary participation, Privacy, Confidentiality, No unnecessary harm, Honest reporting, Proper acknowledgement, Right to withdraw।

Cumulative

New research existing knowledge पर build करती है।

Research starts from existing knowledge and contributes back to knowledge.

Generalisable or Transferable

Parsimonious

Explanation unnecessarily complex

Parsimony = Adequate Explanation with Minimum Unnecessary Complexity
5

What Research Is Not

Research

  • Information collect करना
  • Internet search
  • Sample select
Result hypothesis को Support, Not support, Modify या Reject कर सकता है।
6

Types of Research

Basic / Fundamental / Pure Research —

Basic Research = Knowledge and Theory Building

Characteristics: Curiosity-driven, Theory-oriented, General principles, Long-term contribution, Immediate field solution

Exam Keywords: Knowledge for knowledge's sake, Theory building, Basic principles, Generalisation, No immediate application।

Applied Research —

Applied research existing knowledge या theory का use करके specific practical problem solve करती है।

Applied Research = Theory Applied to Practical Problem

Basic ResearchApplied Research
Theory developmentPractical application
General knowledgeSpecific problem-solving
Immediate use आवश्यक नहींDirect field relevance
"Why does it happen?""How can it be used?"

Action Research —

Action Research = Local Problem + Practitioner + Immediate Improvement + Cyclical Reflection

Associated Thinkers: Kurt Lewin — Action Research concept और cyclical approach; Stephen M. Corey — Education में Action Research का प्रमुख association।

Plan → Act → Observe → Reflect → Re-plan

Characteristics: Small/local sample, Immediate problem, Practitioner as researcher, Improvement of practice, Flexible and cyclical, Context-specific, Collaborative

Teacher improving own classroom practice → Action Research

Applied vs Action Research

Applied ResearchAction Research
Usually small/local group
Broader generalisation सम्भवContext-specific findings
More formal designFlexible cyclical design
Application of theoryAction and reflection

Evaluation Research —

Evaluation Research = Judging the Worth of a Programme or Practice

Exam Keywords: Programme evaluation, Merit and worth, Effectiveness, Impact, Cost-effectiveness, Goal attainment।

Exploratory Research —

ExampleFirst-generation learners AI-based education
Exploratory = What is happening? What may be important?

Descriptive Research —

Characteristics: "What exists?"

Exam TrapDescriptive research cause-and-effect automatically establish

Quantitative vs Qualitative Research

BasisQuantitativeQualitative
DataNumbersWords, narratives, images
PurposeMeasure, test, predictUnderstand meaning and experience
LogicMostly deductiveMostly inductive
DesignStructured/fixedFlexible/emergent
SampleUsually largerUsually smaller/purposive
Natural setting
ToolInstrument is centralResearcher is key instrument
AnalysisStatisticalThematic/interpretive
OutputGeneral patternsContext-rich understanding
Quality termsValidity, reliabilityCredibility, dependability, transferability

Mixed-Methods Research —

Mixed Methods = Numerical Breadth + Qualitative Depth

Experimental Research —

Experimental Research cause-and-effect relationship examine

Essential Elements: Independent variable manipulation, Dependent variable measurement, Control group, Experimental group, Random assignment जहाँ possible, Extraneous-variable control।

Manipulation + Control + Randomisation = True Experiment

Quasi-Experimental Research

Ex-post Facto Research —

Ex-post Facto = Effect Already Occurred → Probable Cause Traced
ExperimentalEx-post Facto
Independent variable manipulatedNo manipulation
Researcher control अधिकControl limited
Event already occurred
Stronger causal inferenceCausation cautiously inferred

Survey Research

Cross-Sectional Survey: एक point in time पर data। Longitudinal Survey: Time के different points पर repeated data।

Conceptual and Empirical Research

Conceptual Research: Concepts, theories और abstract ideas पर आधारित। उदाहरण: Academic freedom की theoretical conceptualisation।

Empirical Research: Observation या systematically collected evidence पर आधारित। उदाहरण: University teachers की perceived academic freedom का survey।

Historical Research

Past events, documents और records का systematic study।

Primary Sources: Original letters, Diaries, Official records, Speeches, Contemporary documents। Secondary Sources: Later books, Review articles, Interpretations।

7

Research Paradigm

Three Core Questions:

  • Epistemology: Knowledge
Paradigm = View of Reality + View of Knowledge + Research Approach
8

Positivism

Auguste Comte → Positivism

Positivism = Objective Reality + Observation + Measurement + Hypothesis Testing + Generalisation

Assumptions:

Methodology: Quantitative methods, Experiment, Survey, Measurement, Statistical analysis, Hypothesis testing, Deductive reasoning।

Theory → Hypothesis → Operationalisation → Data Collection → Statistical Test → Confirmation/Rejection

Key Terms: Objectivity, Measurement, Quantification, Verification, Prediction, Control, General laws, Cause and effect, Value neutrality।

Limitations of Positivism

  • Complete value neutrality difficult
  • Observation theory-free
  • A single method पूरी reality capture नहीं कर सकता
9

Post-Positivism = Reality Exists, but Our Knowledge of It Is Partial and Fallible

Main Association: Critical Realism, Karl Popper — Falsification और conjectures/refutations, Fallibilism, Theory revision, Triangulation, Probabilistic conclusions।

Assumptions:

Methodology: Hypothesis testing, Critical testing, Falsification, Multiple methods, Triangulation, Quantitative तथा qualitative evidence, Probabilistic conclusions, Replication और peer criticism।

Theory → Tentative Hypothesis → Critical Test → Evidence → Revision → Further Testing

Falsification

Scientific Claim = Testable + Falsifiable
इसलिए testable/falsifiable है।
VerificationFalsification
Positivist tendencyPopper/post-positivist association
ConfirmationCritical testing
Final certainty का riskTentative knowledge

Triangulation

Types: Data triangulation, Method triangulation, Investigator triangulation, Theory triangulation।

ExampleOnline-learning engagement को LMS data, Survey, Interviews और Classroom observation से study करना।
Triangulation does not guarantee truth; it strengthens credibility through multiple perspectives.

Positivism vs Post-Positivism

BasisPositivismPost-Positivism
RealityObjective and knowableExists but imperfectly knowable
KnowledgeObservable and measurable factsTentative, fallible and probabilistic
ObjectivityResearcher neutrality emphasisedComplete neutrality impossible; bias controlled
TheoryTested/verifiedCritically tested and revised
MethodPrimarily quantitativeMultiple methods possible
ReasoningDeductiveDeductive plus critical revision
ResearcherDetached observerAcknowledges limitations/reflexivity
ConclusionGeneral lawsProvisional explanation
Quality controlMeasurement and replicationTriangulation, criticism, replication
ThinkerAuguste ComteKarl Popper / Critical Realism
Positivism: Reality can be objectively measured.
Post-Positivism: Measurement is possible, but never perfect or completely free from error and perspective.

Post-Positivism vs Interpretivism

Post-PositivismInterpretivism
Reality exists but imperfectly knownSocial reality meanings से constructed
Critical realismRelativist/constructivist tendencies
Theory testing सम्भवMeaning interpretation प्रमुख
Quantitative और mixed methods सम्भवMostly qualitative
Researcher–participant interaction acknowledged
Probabilistic explanationContextual understanding
10

Important Exam Traps

  • Basic Research theory; Applied Research practical application
  • Descriptive Research cause establish
  • Quantitative Research automatically bias-free
