Meaning of Research Method
Research Method वह व्यवस्थित तरीका है जिसके माध्यम से researcher किसी research problem का अध्ययन करता है, data एकत्र करता है, उसका analysis करता है और conclusion तक पहुँचता है।
Five major methods:
- Experimental Research — प्रयोगात्मक अनुसंधान
- Descriptive Research — वर्णनात्मक अनुसंधान
- Historical Research — ऐतिहासिक अनुसंधान
- Qualitative Research — गुणात्मक अनुसंधान
- Quantitative Research — मात्रात्मक अनुसंधान
Experimental Research — प्रयोगात्मक अनुसंधान
- Researcher manipulates an independent variable to study its effect on a dependent variable
- Example: Flipped classroom method (IV) → Academic achievement (DV)

- Key features: Variable manipulation, experimental & control groups, cause–effect relationship, controlled conditions, objective measurement, hypothesis testing, random assignment (where possible), replication
Experimental Designs
- Pre-experimental Design: Minimal control (e.g., one-group pre-test–post-test). Shows improvement but cannot prove it was due to treatment alone.
- True Experimental Design: Manipulation + Control group + Random assignment
- Quasi-experimental Design: Manipulation occurs, but random assignment is absent (e.g., intact classroom sections).
Exam Trap: Random selection ≠ Random assignment. Selection is about choosing the sample; assignment is about putting participants into groups.
Descriptive Research — वर्णनात्मक अनुसंधान
- Describes existing conditions, populations, attitudes, behaviours — without manipulating variables
- Examples: University students' attitudes toward online learning; teachers' job satisfaction survey; study habits; dropout rate study
- Key features: Systematic description, natural setting, no manipulation, large samples possible, uses questionnaires/interviews/observation/surveys
- Types: Survey (cross-sectional/longitudinal), Correlational, Case Study, Developmental Study
Historical Research — ऐतिहासिक अनुसंधान
- Examples: Development of higher education in India; National Education Policies comparative analysis; Ancient Indian universities
- Primary Sources: Original records directly related to the studied period/event (government orders, letters, diaries, speeches, official records, photographs, minutes, manuscripts, eyewitness accounts)
- Secondary Sources: Interpretations/analyses based on primary sources (textbooks, biographies, review articles, later historical accounts, encyclopaedias)
Source Criticism
- External Criticism — बाह्य आलोचना: Checks authenticity of the source. Is the document genuine? Who wrote it? When? Any later changes?
- Internal Criticism — आंतरिक आलोचना: Checks accuracy and credibility of the information. Is the author reliable? Biased? An eyewitness?
Process: Problem selection → Research questions → Source discovery → Primary/secondary data collection → External criticism → Internal criticism → Evidence organisation → Interpretation & report writing
Quantitative Research — मात्रात्मक अनुसंधान
- Key features: Numerical data, structured tools, large sample, hypothesis testing, statistical analysis, objectivity, deductive reasoning, generalisation, reliability & validity, replication
- Data tools: Structured questionnaire, achievement test, rating scale, standardised test, structured observation, experiments
- Statistical techniques: Mean, median, mode, standard deviation, correlation, t-test, ANOVA, Chi-square, regression
Qualitative Research — गुणात्मक अनुसंधान
- Key features: Non-numerical data, natural setting, participant perspectives, flexible/emergent design, small purposive sample, researcher as instrument, inductive reasoning, contextual/holistic understanding, thick description, multiple realities
- Data techniques: In-depth interview, focus-group discussion, participant observation, field notes, documents/diaries, audio-visual material, open-ended questions
- Sampling: Generally purposive sampling
Qualitative Methods
- Phenomenology: Study of lived experiences (e.g., online examination anxiety experiences)
- Ethnography: Study of cultural/social group beliefs, practices, behaviour through prolonged field study
- Grounded Theory: Theory emerges from data — not imposed beforehand
- Narrative Research: Study of individuals' stories and life experiences
- Qualitative Case Study: Detailed contextual study of a bounded case (person, institution, programme, event)

- Convergent Design: Both types collected simultaneously, findings compared
- Explanatory Sequential: Quantitative first, then qualitative to explain results
