Research Process Overview
Research एक systematic, logical और evidence-based process है। Research हमेशा पूरी तरह linear नहीं होता; qualitative और exploratory research में researcher पिछले चरणों पर वापस जाकर बदलाव कर सकता है।
Identification of Research Problem
Research Problem वह specific issue, difficulty, knowledge gap या unanswered question है जिसका systematic investigation किया जाना है।
- Characteristics: Clear, specific, researchable, relevant, feasible, ethical, aligned with researcher's competence/interest
- Sources: Previous research gaps, existing theories, classroom/workplace problems, social/educational issues, contradictory findings, personal experience, government reports, emerging trends
Exam Trap: Research area and research problem are not the same. "Teaching Aptitude" is an area; "Effect of flipped classroom on achievement" is a problem.
Review of Related Literature
- Primary Sources: Original research articles, theses, dissertations, original reports, conference papers, original datasets
- Secondary Sources: Review articles, textbooks, encyclopaedias, research summaries, meta-analysis reports
- Purpose: Understand previous research, identify research gaps, clarify concepts/theories, avoid unnecessary duplication, select methods/tools, support hypothesis building, provide background for comparison
Formulation of Objectives
- Characteristics: Specific, clear, measurable/observable, aligned with research problem, feasible
- Action Verbs: To identify, examine, compare, determine, analyse, explore, evaluate
Exam Trap: Objective and method are different. "Comparing achievement" is an objective; using t-test for comparison is an analysis technique.

Formulation of Hypothesis
- Null Hypothesis (H₀): No relationship or difference exists
- Alternative/Research Hypothesis (H₁): Relationship or difference exists
- Directional: Specifies the direction of relationship/difference
- Non-directional: States difference without specifying direction
Exam Trap: Every research does NOT require a formal hypothesis. Exploratory and some qualitative studies may use research questions only.
Variables & Operational Definition
- Independent Variable: Manipulated by researcher
- Dependent Variable: Measured outcome
- Extraneous Variable: Other factor affecting outcome
- Control Variable: Deliberately kept constant
- Confounding Variable: Changes with IV and obscures results
Example: Academic achievement = score on a standardised achievement test (operational definition).
Selection of Research Design
- Major Designs: Experimental, Descriptive, Survey, Correlational, Historical, Case study, Qualitative, Ex-post facto, Mixed methods
Population and Sample
- Probability Sampling: Simple random, systematic, stratified, cluster, multistage
- Non-probability Sampling: Convenience, purposive, quota, snowball
Exam Point: Large sample ≠ automatically representative. Quantitative research often uses probability sampling; qualitative research commonly uses purposive sampling.
Research Tools
- Common Tools: Questionnaire, Interview schedule, Observation schedule, Achievement test, Aptitude test, Attitude scale, Rating scale, Checklist, Focus-group discussion guide
- Quality Criteria: Reliability (consistency), Validity (accuracy/appropriateness), Objectivity (minimal scorer bias), Usability (practical)
Pilot Study and Pre-testing
- Pilot Study: Small-scale trial of the main research procedure
- Purpose: Check feasibility, clarity, identify tool flaws, estimate time, anticipate field problems, gather reliability/validity evidence
- Pre-test: Specifically testing the questionnaire/tool on a small group for clarity and suitability
Exam Trap: Pilot study is NOT a replacement for the main study; it is preparation for it.
Data Collection
- Primary Data: Collected first-hand by researcher (interviews, questionnaires, observations, experiments, tests)
- Secondary Data: Already available (census reports, government publications, institutional records, published research, databases)
- Precautions: Informed consent, confidentiality, standardised procedure, no unnecessary pressure, accurate records, no fabrication/falsification
Organisation and Processing of Data
- Editing: Checking incomplete, inconsistent, incorrect responses
- Coding: Assigning symbols/numbers to responses (e.g., Male=1, Female=2)
- Classification: Grouping similar data into categories
- Tabulation: Presenting data in rows and columns
- Data Cleaning: Checking missing values, duplicates, outliers
Data Analysis
- Descriptive Statistics: Frequency, percentage, mean, median, mode, range, standard deviation
- Inferential Statistics: t-test, ANOVA, Chi-square, correlation, regression
- Qualitative Analysis: Transcription, coding, categorisation, theme development, pattern identification, narrative/content analysis, interpretation
Exam Trap: Analysis ≠ Interpretation. Analysis shows what the data says; Interpretation explains the meaning of the findings.
Hypothesis Testing
- Common Significance Levels: 0.05, 0.01
- Process: Formulate H₀ → Set significance level → Select test → Calculate statistic → Compare p-value/critical value → Reject or fail to reject H₀
Interpretation of Findings
- Connect findings to objectives
- Explain results in context of hypotheses
- Compare with previous studies
- Discuss theoretical and practical implications
- Provide possible explanations for unexpected findings
Example: r=0.60 between study time and achievement → moderately strong positive relationship, but does NOT prove causation.
Conclusion and Generalisation
- Conclusion: Concise, evidence-based answer to research questions
- Generalisation: Applying sample findings to wider population
Exam Trap: Not every study can be universally generalised. Qualitative research emphasises transferability rather than statistical generalisation.
Recommendations and Implications
- Practical actions based on findings
- Suggestions for future research
- Should be realistic and connected to findings
Research Report Writing
- Preliminary Pages: Title page, declaration, acknowledgement, abstract, table of contents, list of tables/figures
- Main Body: Introduction, Literature review, Methodology, Results, Discussion, Findings & conclusions, Recommendations, Limitations
- End Matter: References/Bibliography, Appendices, Research tools, Consent forms
- Qualities: Clarity, logical organisation, academic language, accurate citations, objectivity, transparency, plagiarism-free

- Research problem selection begins BEFORE literature review, but review may refine the problem
- Hypothesis is NOT mandatory in every research
- Pilot study is NOT the main research
- Reliability does NOT guarantee validity
- Research design and tool selection must occur BEFORE data collection
- Analysis and interpretation are DIFFERENT steps
- Correlation does NOT prove causation
- Better to say "fail to reject null hypothesis" than "accept" it
- Report writing is the final formal step, but dissemination follows
- Research process is NOT rigidly linear; it can be iterative
